Basic Clothing Required for All Fencing

Underarm Protector aka 'Plastron'

Plastrons are worn on the sword arm side of the body. They provide additional protection to the underarm and rib cage. They are an extremely important part of the uniform and are required for all fencing.

Plastic Chest Protector

The chest protector is required for women of all ages but is optional for men. There are a variety of designs to choose from.

Men's Protective Cup

A cup is not required but it is strongly suggested.

Jacket

The jacket must be made of a "robust material". In the United States material with 350 newtons of puncture resistance is considered to meet that requirement. A stronger 800 newton material is required of uniforms worn at international competition.

Pants and Long Socks

The pants must be made of a "robust material". In the United States material with 350 newtons of puncture resistance is considered to meet that requirement. A stronger 800 newton material is required of uniforms worn at international competition.

Pants and jacket must have an overlap of at least 4 inches. Pants must also reach below the knee and incorporate a closure of some kind (usually elastic) at the bottom of the leg. Pants are available in both knicker and full length leg.

Long socks are required that cover any skin not already coverd by the pants.

Shoes

Actual fencing shoes are not required. Any athletic shoe will do. However, the fencer's heel takes quite a pounding. Good fencing shoes have an extremely strong, stiff heel to protect the fencer's foot. If you chose to wear regular tennis shoes, consider getting heel cups to soften the beating your heels will take.

About

Yes, we absolutely do fence in a cornfield! Literally at Bluff Grange, a farmers' coop building in the corner of a cornfield on the bluffs over the Missisippi River Valley near St. Louis in Southern Illinois.

We have both recreational and competitive fencers of all ages.
